Three things happen at once: the muscles around the pipes tighten up like a squeezed fist, the lining of the pipes swells up with inflammation, and the body produces thick mucus that acts like a plug.
This combination creates a mechanical barrier that prevents life sustaining oxygen from reaching your blood. If this is not treated quickly it leads to a state of near fatal asthma where the oxygen levels drop so low that it can cause a heart attack or brain damage. This is why having an inhaler is not a luxury but a necessity for survival.
WHERE ASTHMA IS RAMPANT
Asthma is most rampant in our big urban centers like Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Kano. In Lagos alone about 8 percent of the population deals with this condition which is one of the highest rates in the country. The reasons for this are all around us:
- Dirty Air: Constant smoke from diesel generators and vehicle emissions irritates the lungs every single day.
- Indoor Pollution: Using kerosene or charcoal for cooking in homes that do not have good ventilation traps dangerous gases inside where families sleep.
- Weather Changes: The dry Harmattan season brings Sahara dust while the rainy season causes mold to grow in damp walls which are both major triggers for a sudden attack.
Surviving the HIgh Cost of Drugs
Since major companies like GSK left Nigeria, the price of a standard Ventolin inhaler has jumped from ₦2,000 to over ₦10,000 . If you cannot afford your medicine:
